Adams, Douglas. see [audio]
Alexander, Lloyd. The Black Cauldron. $2.69.
Paperback reprint 1965 hardcover; new Yearling edition. Prydain 2. Cover art by Jody Lee. A Newbery Honor Book.
"It seems a little odd for Yearling to inaugurate its new mass market paperback series with only the second book in the Prydain sequence, one which relies so strongly on the first, The Book of Three. Odder yet, the other volumes at present only available in trade paperback format. Perhaps the accountants making the decision only knew the title because of the mostly-better-forgotten Disney adaptation? Packaging aside, I still highly recommend these tales of magical coming of age against a Welsh background."--Dave

Ashwell, Pauline. Project Farcry. $10.99.
Trade paperback reprint 1995 hardcover. Cover art by Gary Ruddell.
"Fix-up novel in five novelette chunks. Starts off as classic Campbell telepath first contact fiction -- which indeed it turns out to be, a somewhat rewritten version of her first story 'Big Sword' from the October 1958 issue of Astounding Science Fiction (this trade paperback has been reset for intended mass-market publication, but both misdate the story's publication date -- the hardcover gives a highly improbable January 1989, the trade paperback 'corrects' it to a still-wrong January 1959). Unfortunately it takes a left turn for two segments, then follows up its dropped storyline in the last two segments. Structurally the book is a mess, introducing characters much too late, skimming over the main character's climactic emotional growth crisis. And yet, there are a lot of good (if somewhat rehashed) ideas floating about here. Too bad Ashwell didn't have a stronger (Campbell-like) editor to help pull the pieces together!"--Dave
