[Stephenson, Neal and J. Frederick George] as 'Stephen Bury'. The Cobweb. $6.50.
Paperback reprint 1996 trade paperback.
"Well, the problem is that although the book is well-crafted, Neil Stephenson has written many great books before, and this one just doesn't measure up.
"Cobweb is the story of a several; almost completely unconnected people, trying to work through a morass of political intrigue to get to the bottom of a nasty plot. It's set in America, 1990, and the issues of the day are integral to the plot.
"The thing that was supposed to grab the reader, I suppose, was the plausibility of the the whole story, given actual world events at the time. The imminent disaster that we see building could actually have happened. In that sense, current events junkies will be thrilled with this story. But the over-all effect was simply not chilling--not chilling for a thriller, anyway.
"The best part of the story isn't the suspense, but the characters. The best two are a deputy-sheriff, Clyde Banks, who hides a remarkable mind behind the exterior of a quiet, simple family man (he carries his baby through most of the story), and the Government agent, Hennessy, who has made it his job to make dishonest government agents queasy, and has a strong, up-front character (unless he's being sneaky...). It is worthwhile reading the book to follow their story, and see how they finally meet. It is also a pleasure to see the bits of very-Stephensonish warm humor that get inserted along the way. However, if you want a teeth-grinding thriller, you might be better off reading Iain Banks."--Eric
